A Pact With The Devil
News Corp. and Microsoft are working on a deal that might take News Corp. content off of Google and put it exclusively on Bing, Microsoft’s search engine. That means that if you do a Google search, content from a News Corp. outlet, such as The Wall Street Journal or Fox News, would not show up. You would have to use Bing to find it.
The devil, in this case, would be…Microsoft for doing what AOL had done for so many years, trying to make the Internet a gated-community. Rupert Murdoch gets richer with this scheme. He will find one way or another to collect coin for use of his properties. Enjoy FOX News while it is still FREE. The website will be a pay-site as soon as Murdoch’s minions figure out a way to make that work.
Some newspapers [New York Times] have already gone to the subscription service model. I know of a private website, of interest to radio broadcasters and few others, that is only available on a subscription basis and has been for the past four years. It has limited appeal. I don’t know how the guy makes any real money at it. Maybe all he needs is something to cover his hosting fees.
Microsoft is so jealous of Google. MSFT wants a piece of Google’s pie. They are not going to win the battle against Google by building another AOL. Content is very important, to any site. But Microsoft will not beat Google by charging entry to their amusement park. As with online file-sharing, people will find a different source for their news and entertainment. The Internet is similar to the old American economic free-enterprise system. You remember that, don’t you?
