Conservatives Threatened with Punishment: The Fairness Doctrine
The failure of AIR America Radio to gain audience acceptance and ratings = bounced paychecks, stations going dark and lots of whining from liberals. There is a movement underway to bring about a change in how talkradio operates. A movement by Liberals to change the rules to suit their needs. There is even a movement by some within government to silence the opposing voices on the airwaves of radio and TV.
The thinking is, because liberal talkradio can’t function on its own, competing for listeners against Conservative talkradio, Liberal talkradio needs to have new rules set in place to allow a level playing field.
A new FCC commissioner is backing this plan, attempting to bring back rules that would demand equal time on all stations for opposing views. Not just an offer of airtime, but a requirement that the time be set aside for opposing views. A station might lose its broadcast license by failing to do so.
As an example, Conservative talker KVI Seattle, would have to devote 12 hours of each day to Liberal talk hosts and guests to off-set the Conservative views aired the other half of the day.
Successful talk stations would see their revenue drop, as listeners turn away to alternative sources of information. AIR America is a failure, compared to FOX News talk hosts. Forced to split the broadcast day, stations like KVI would suffer losses, while AIR America could only benefit from the addition of Conservative talk hosts.
What does this do? It makes all stations = Equal. They would all begin sounding = The Same. That is what the Obamanation of America is all about. Silence the opposition, take the pulpit away from them and force them to SHARE their operations for the benefit of the Liberal voices.
This is NOT something the Conservative hosts would or have ever asked for. They can make it on their own. They don’t need the government to force Liberal stations to allow Equal Time for Conservatives. But the Liberal talkers, needing to get their “talking points” heard by more people, cannot do this on their own. They don’t have the skills, talent, revenues or wits about them, to do what Conservative talk radio and television has done. The ratings prove that Conservative talk wins the ratings war. That means $$. It is all done honestly, based on popularity. It is what the public chooses to listen to.
So, the whiners have a new voice in the FCC. Mark Lloyd, newly appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the Federal Communications Commission, has called for making private broadcasting companies pay licensing fees equal to their total operating costs to allow public broadcasting outlets to spend the same on their operations as the private companies do.
Along with this money, Lloyd would regulate much of the programming on these stations to make sure they focused on “diverse views” and government activities.
“Local public broadcasters and regional and national communications operations should be required to encourage and broadcast diverse views and programs,” wrote Lloyd. [CNSNews.com]
This does not allow the marketplace to decide what station it turns to for news and talk. It will force listeners to suffer the inane babbling of opposing views, or tune out. By tuning out, that station then loses revenue as ratings drop. We already know that Liberal talk radio can barely support itself. Now, these rulings would cause Conservative talkradio to program half of its programming day with shows that will drive away most of the listeners that would usually be tuned in during those hours. There obviously are not enough Liberal listeners to support anything beyond AIR America or NPR.
It is another case of taking from those that are doing well, to spread the wealth more evenly. Those that have the most money and listeners should be made to give some of that up, so that less fortunate radio stations might have some of that action. It won’t help Liberal talkradio as much as it will serve to destroy and SILENCE the opposing point of view = Conservative Talk Radio.
