There will be a lot to see and do at the celebration of Tacoma’s working waterfront coming up Sat & Sun, Aug 29-30, 2009 Time: 10a – 6p This is definitely a family event, fun for everyone. Bring your camera, there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
Pacific Northwest artists will display their maritime art, competing for an $800 prize. Judge for yourself as you view the exhibits. The official judge will be City of Tacoma Arts Administrator Amy McBride.
9th Annual Dragons on the Foss Corporate Challenge, takes place Sat, Aug. 29 at the Beach at Thea’s Park, S 4th & Dock St. The event is organized by the Tacoma Dragon Boat Association, a nonprofit amateur athletic organization formed by paddlers dedicated to sharing this 2,400 year old Chinese sport with others.
You can ride the rail around the Tacoma Tideflats at Tacoma Rail’s open house. Tacoma Rail Train Rides & Open House will take place Sat, Aug. 29, at Tacoma Rail, 2601 SR-509/ N Frontage St. 10a – 2p Learn how Tacoma’s own freight-switching service supports the economic health of the Port of Tacoma and the Tideflats industries. In addition to free train rides, you will be able to walk through a locomotive, view railroad maintenance equipment, visit the locomotive shops, see two large model railroad layouts, have your face painted, visit with clowns, play a game, eat food… Children will receive a token of their visit. My father worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, I am looking forward to this. This would be an event anyone with interests in trains and the railroad system would be interested in.
Enjoy the Sea Scouts Boat Rides, Sat & Sun, Aug. 29-30, at Thea Foss Dock, S 4th & Dock St. Board a 78-foot retired coast guard cutter, a 90-foot sailing yacht or a 38-foot Bantry Bay rowing gig. Over 1,000 people last year went for free boat rides aboard the many ships of the Sea Scouts in Tacoma, and thousands more received guided tours of these vessels.
Bring the whole family and cast off from Tacoma’s famous working waterfront for a tour of Commencement Bay aboard the comfortable Good Time II. The Port of Tacoma Tours happens Sun, Aug. 30, departing from the heart of the Maritime Festival at the Dock Street Landing Restaurant dock at 535 Dock St. This is one of the many FREE events that weekend.
