Yahoo! to Close GeoCities
Yahoo! is leveling all communities in GeoCities. Effective October 26th, GeoCities will be no more. Yahoo! is warning everyone in any of the GeoCities communities to move their files to Yahoo! Web Hosting.
GeoCities is an old, free, ad-based web-hosting service, purchased by Yahoo! a couple years back. Yahoo! began encroaching on the sites with watermarks, ads and further restrictions. If you wanted a nice website without interference and annoyances, you moved from GeoCities to a domain of your own.
GeoCities is pretty much a ghost town. There are some old websites that professed to be directories of “cool Geocities sites”. Clicking on most of these links brings you to pages that were started, but never completed, or long ago abandoned.
GeoCities is like Tripod and Angelfire. These are services that were purchased by larger companies and then regulated to the point that these sites were not user friendly, with pop-up ads, 1/4 of the screen covered by ads, and restrictions on use.
I had a page hosted by GeoCities in the 90s. My enthusiasm for the service quickly died, once I leased my first domain. Owning your own domain is the only way to go, if you plan to maintain a website long-term.
