It’s Time For The Bird To Leave The Chicken Coop

It’s mid July. You know what that means? Our favorite season of the year is fast approaching. No, I’m not talking about sending our kids back to school; it’s almost election season again! Wow. Weren’t we just there a few months ago?
I have been a long time promoter of getting rid of the “good old boys (and girls) network” of University Place politicians who have been in city hall since the city’s official birth-the same politicians who have done a great job of spending money that taxpayers don’t have. And they’ve done a great job of playing musical chairs; every so often they trade roles but isn’t it peculiar-they always find a way to prevent new kids on the block from playing.
I’m seeing political ad campaign signs around University Place already and there seems to be a new phrase on some of them I haven’t seen before: “Time for a change.” Wow.. What a concept!
Javier Figueroa is running for the city council seat currently held by Linda Bird. She’s one of the people we can thank for creating such a great looking and financially viable University Place town center project. Oh, wait… That’s the project that was delayed several times and still looks like a dirt pile. Never mind…
If Javier is who he says he is, he should be handed Linda Bird’s cat seat. A blurb from his website:
“Javier Figueroa, a community leader and real estate development consultant, has announced his candidacy for University Place City Council. Figueroa is seeking election to position #1, currently held by Councilmember Linda Bird.
Figueroa’s diverse background and 25 years of experience in forensic real estate contract management and property development will bring a fresh attitude and understanding to resolving the development and financial issues the City of University Place is currently facing. He is committed to making sure city government is transparent and accountable to the citizens of University Place.
Figueroa’s experience in the real estate field encompasses the specialized fields of contract management, sales, development, appraising, project management, environmental issues, and property rights. He is nationally & internationally recognized for his expertise in real estate negotiations, public right-of-ways, and financing of energy efficiency.
Deeply committed to the community, Figueroa has volunteered in a variety of community programs, from being a University Place Parks Commissioner to a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the Pierce County Juvenile Court System, and from being a board member for The Grand Cinema to currently serving 15 years as a certified arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau of Washington.”
It appears to me Javier knows what he’s doing. And check out his list of endorsements on his website at www.electjavierfigueroa.org. There’s some big names there. Can you say Weyerhaeuser? McKenna? Carrell? Gorton? Then check out the list of University Place businesses who are supporting Javier. There’s a little over two dozen of them at last check.
I think it is time for real change. Let’s open the Bird cage and say “Shoooooo! Fly away!”
