Banking On Change
The new business center on the NE corner of 40th & Bridgeport, houses a branch of Boeing Employee’s Credit Union, now called BECU. This is Washington’s largest credit union, founded in 1935. I think we will see some of the real estate along Bridgeport Way transformed over the next few years. I doubt both Albertsons & Safeway will remain long after the Town Center is completed. We will see more business offices and fewer stand-alone convenience stores and coffee shops.
BECU [click on picture for larger image] is a convenient option for those of us tired of being over-charged for services from large banks, such as Wells Fargo. Maybe BECU will be a friendlier place to do banking. It’s closer to my house than Wells Fargo, and deposits can be made to a BECU account at any credit union in town. All credit unions are tied together by computer, making banking a breeze whether in a BECU branch or at Sound Credit Union.
Take a picture of University Place today and see the difference five years from now. I wasn’t too happy to see the new building going in at 40th & Bridgeport, but … this is progress. The city is growing up.
