Here is a picture of the Kalebu/Jones home prior to it being burned in this weeks horrific fire.  It once served as a comfy home in University Place for former football great J.J Jones of the New York Jets and Deborah Kalebu his long-time roommate of 15 years.

It is believed that Kalebu’s nephew had something to do with their demise and the fire.  Police questioned and released him following the events.  There is aparently further investigation needed to find out exactly what occured here.  Kalebu’s nephew had just been served with a restrainting order a day prior to this tragic incident.  Very coincidental if you ask me.

I saw this story on the King 5 news today as I sat at my orthopedic’s office.  I was awaiting the great news that my broken leg is healed and I can finally walk again!  It’s a shame that such great news would be overshadowed with such sadness.

When I first saw the story come on I thought it may have occurred in Seattle, Kent, Lakewood or Tacoma, but to my surprise it happened in University Place, my own “backyard.”  I wonder if the police do find out that the nephew did have something to do with it, will anything be done to “keep an eye on” suspicious people in U.P. in the future.  Apparently, police had been called out before to this home for domestic situations where the nephew was involved, according to the news.  The aunt had to get a restraining order to “protect” her from her nephew.  Obviously someone knew there was history of problems here.

I wonder where the U.P. police force was when our family was driving back from the Galaxy 8 Cinemas this evening.  It appeared that a drunk driver was in front of us swerving all over the road, sometimes almost onto the sidewalk.  Are we being properly protected here in U.P?  Or is it a false sense of security that we have here?  I have routinely driven through the Forza drive thru on early mornings prior to work and there is the same officer in there flirting with the baristas.  Maybe the U.P police should get their coffee to go and get out on our streets and make this area a safer place for our kids.  I’m concerned as to what this once prestigious neighborhood is turning into.  I can barely tell where Tacoma ends and U.P. begins anymore.  I hope the mayor of University Place reads this blog and sets some type of action plan in place to protect our residents before this all gets too far out of control.
