U.P. History Question Answered
For a few weeks now, I have been trying to recall what store was in place of the 40th & Bridgeport Albertsons, back in the 60s. After more research, it turns out, the store was a Food King. Pictured here is the old Food King store at 56th (South Tacoma Way) which was next to Bob’s Burger Barn.
Furthermore, if you were around back then, you may recall that across from the 40th & Bridgeport Food King was Berg’s Colonial Inn. Berg’s Colonial Inn & Tavern featured an extensive menu of chicken, homemade pizza, and hamburgers. There was dancing on weekends to live music and pool tables were available. The Tacoma Public Library has an extensive collection of local historical data in their files.
John Wallerich and his antique automobile were surrounded by fellow South Tacoma businessmen advertising the district’s “Old Fashion Sidewalk Sale” to be held on July 19-20, 1963. The 1914 Chevrolet Royal Mail was parked outside of the new Food King supermarket at 3510 So. 56th St., near Puget Sound Avenue. Admiring the car were: Jake Schwitzer, Bob Briem, Wayne Hogan, Sgt. Carl Parker, Ray Harver, Fred Ludvig, Chuck Stanley, Lloyd Owings, Dr. M.A. Twiet, Mickey Hogan, and Bob Robinson. Photograph ordered by the News Tribune.
