Jo's Barbershop Rocks

Do me a favor by doing yourself a favor. Drive down 27th Street West in University Place towards the water (that’s also going west if you need further instructions). Immediately after going past the locally-world-famous Pine Cone Cafe, slam on your brakes!

After your auto airbag deflates, look to your left and immediately pull into the parking lot at Jo’s Barber Shop (do so quickly or you might get rear-ended).

You’ve arrived at a really good barber shop. Now, let’s not confuse Jo’s with the competition like Supercuts, 7-11 Cuts, Nakedcuts and all the other hack job hair places where it’s a roll of the dice-you might get a great stylist or you might get someone who hates their job and hates you for that matter.

Jo’s Barber Shop is owned and managed by Joanne Jones. Her son Spencer is also a barber at the establishment. Joanne (don’t ever call her that-call her Jo) is a super lady; a 70’s graduate from Curtis High School and the mom of a great down to earth, salt of the earth, family values kind of family. Spencer is super cool. He’s the coolest guy I’ve ever met besides myself.

I have been going to Jo’s for several years and have never been back to Supercuts or Hackjobcuts since. Both Jo and Spencer are super, genuinely friendly, fun people. They judge no one and treat everyone well. If your hair needs involve someone who can do hair “styles,” perms, nails and such, you don’t want to go here. There’s plenty of good hair salons to choose from I’m sure. But if you just want a good hair cut that’s not going to look weird when it grows out you need to go to Jo’s.

The place is not fancy inside, but it’s clean and comfortable both physically and emotionally. There’s good stuff to read; usually some coffee and always cable tv. Sometimes they even change the channel for you if you ask nice. If you like to chat, Jo and Spencer will listen unjudgementally. If you like to keep your mouth shut, they won’t make you talk. Going to Jo’s is like visiting family (or family you wish you had-depending on your circumstances).

They usually have one or two of the family dogs there too, but they’re not pitbulls or any type of dog little kids would or should be afraid of. I’ve noticed a lot of people take their little kids there. Jo seems to do better at dealing with little kids, probably because a lot of little tikes get rattled at hair cut time and being a nice mom, Jo knows how to calm rattled nerves.

Spencer usually does my hair. He cuts really slow for me because I don’t have a lot of hair anymore and he knows it boosts my ego if he makes it like he has a lot of cutting to do.

They also give you one of those old-fashioned bay rum massages after your cut; if you don’t want it they never try to force it on you. They just seem to know how to take good care of people.

The only downside is that their operating hours vary. They’re not open late at night like some other hair places but I’m so spoiled by Jo’s place I work my schedule around it. Their hours are posted on the door or you can call the shop at (253) 534-9700. Leave a message if you have to, they always return messages.

I can’t promise everyone will like Jo’s but their clientele is growing so that must say something.

And that’s what the deal is!
