Juneteenth
Today June 19th marks the holiday that is most widely recognized for African Americans and their plight of slavery. The emancipation from slavery is what is being celebrated today, and has been celebrated since as far back as 1865.
President Obama recognized it today as it is the 144th anniversary of the holiday. Obama noted that..”today is a day that the descendants of slaves and slave owners can commemorate this day together and celebrate the rights and freedoms that we all share in this great nation that we all love.”
This is the day that African American slaves in Texas learned they were free. This holiday is recognized in 31 states. Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day. Did you know that the U.S. Senate passed a resolution this week by unanimous vote, calling for an apology for slavery and segregation.
