Brown Rips Us Off
Everytime I use the services of the UPS Store in the Green Firs Shopping Center, University Place, I feel as though I have been royally ripped-off. Check the numbers and it is obvious that re-sellers of postal services are making bank on our laziness. If we took the time to drive to the US Post office in our area, we would save some major money on each of the services.
Today, I sent a letter Certified Mail – Return Receipt from the UPS Store. The only reason I go to the UPS Store is because I had no idea where the nearest US Post office is, until today. The cost of sending a certified letter [regular weight] is $4.80 at UPS as opposed to $2.80 at the US Post Office. Add to this the cost of Return Receipt, $3.80 at the UPS Store, or $2.30 at the Post Office, and the cost of postage for the letter itself, .61 cents at UPS Store and .44 cents at the US Post Office. We can see that the transaction totaled $9.21 at the UPS Store, but would have only been $5.54 at the Post Office. I could have saved $3.67 by driving to the nearest US Post Office which is at 6817 27TH ST W in UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA [98466-9998]. This is just a few blocks north of the UPS Store, maybe a 5 minute drive farther down the road. It pays to find out where these places are, for future reference.
Coincidentally, I had just gone to the Brown Bear Car Wash at 38th Street near Pine just 10 minutes earlier. That is right around the corner from the US Post Office at 3503 S 56TH ST, TACOMA, WA 98409-9997. [Addresses found at USPS.COM] I really don’t find the “convenience” of the UPS Store appealing anymore. The extra savings are worth the short trip to the Post Office.

It is very interesting that people feel they are being ripped off for convenience at a UPS Store, but will go into a 7-11 and pay over a dollar for a bottle of water. Even pay 2 dollars more for a 12 pack of beer. How about the price of gas at a station on the highway. The postage price needs to be inflated to pay for the rental of the postage machines and other overhead cost of running a business. If you knew the cost of a T-Shirt you would be outraged at the price stores charge. If I had a UPS store in my nearby shopping center, I would rather pay 10 cents more to mail a letter there then wasting my gas and time to drive to our postoffice, which is always busy, and has horrible service.
