It was a beautiful Saturday morning around 9AM when I decided I would take the dog for a walk with my roller blades on.  I decided to head over to the neighbors first to let them know about some news regarding our soccer team.  I stepped up on their doorstep and rang the bell.  Nobody was home so I turned to head out on my walk and my right rollerblade rolled out from under me.  I fell with all of my weight onto my left leg.  This twisted my left leg until I heard a “SNAP!” I was on the ground in the flower bed, dirt all over me.

I felt a lot of pain and thought “I really did a good sprain on this leg, it’s gonna be sore for a couple days.”  I tried to move it and couldn’t it hurt too bad.  I used my hands to twist my foot back into position, that hurt too.  I tried to get up and couldn’t due to the immense pain.  I tried to take my skate off thinking that I would be able to walk on it but after I got the skate off which by the way was excruciating I could not walk, I couldn’t even get up.

There I sat in the dirt with my socks on, writhing in pain.  I couldn’t move so I called my boyfriend to come and get me.  He came right away and carried all my stuff while I hopped along on one foot holding onto him.  I felt like I was hopping for miles even though it was only 2 doors down.  When I got home, I had been hyperventalating from the pain and was about to throw up.  I was chilled and could feel a cold sweat rushing over my entire body.  My extremeties were trembling and tingling.  I had never experienced sensations such as these in all my years.

I sat down on the couch and put my leg up on the coffee table.  It hurt pretty bad.  After a couple of hours I could stand on it with a considerable amount of pain.  I called my dad and he said I should go to the Dr. right away cause it could be worse than I think.  I didn’t think it was that bad though.  I decided it would be best to get an ACE bandage and Steve suggested some crutches.  I really felt like it was just a super bad sprain and it would be ok in a few days or a week or so.

We kept it iced and elevated.  Got the crutches and the ACE bandage.  We needed some groceries and the crutches made it easy to get around so I told Steve we should go to Albertson’s and get some food for the house.  We did, when we got back home we made lunch together.  Then we ate and watched some TV.  We decided to go see Star Trek since we’d been wanting to see it for a while.  We headed out and caught the flick, it was AWESOME!  When we got home I kept elevating it and Steve kept bringing me lots of ice bags for the ankle.

On Monday I took a picture of the ankle and sent it to my mom.  She used to be a nurse’s aide and had seen a lot of medical stuff in her years.  She said I’d better get to a Dr. right away cause my leg was broken.  She said that the swelling was way too bad to just be a sprain.  I called the Dr. and made an appointment for Tuesday.

I saw my general practitioner Tuesday morning and he said that the swelling concerned him and he ordered an x-ray.  I went to the radiologist and got the x-ray.  The x-ray tech there said I definitely broke my fibula which is the smaller bone in your lower leg.  I was amazed!  I couldn’t believe I had broken a bone.  This was my first broken bone in my life.

I took the x-ray back to my GP and he referred me to a specialist.  Before I left the GP’s office, he fitted me with a walking cast and advised me to stay off the leg, ice it and continue to use my crutches.   I went to the specialist appointment 2 days later and he said I would not need a cast.  I was very thankful because I was really panicked about having a cast on my leg.  The specialist said that I should keep using the crutches for the next two weeks and then come back and see him.

If all was healing well by then I could lose the crutches and keep the walking cast on.  Then after 2 more weeks I could take the cast off totally.  So here I am about 1 week after seeing the specialist and I’m really getting used to having the walking cast on.  I am taking Percocet for pain as needed.  So far there isn’t too much pain there’s a lot of bruising though.  I can’t wait to get this cast off totally cause I was just starting a weight loss program as you may have read in my previous post.  Which by the way I am doing really well on the weight loss thing.  I have lost 8 ponds in the past 2 weeks.  I am losing about a pound a day on average.

Basically, what I have been doing so far is walking about 40 minutes to an hour on my crutches everyday just general getting around the house and work.  I also bought some ankle weights and I use those at nite while I watch TV.  I lift and lower my broken leg and then alternate lifting and lowering my good leg with the 3lb ankle weight on it.

The food I am eating is basically normal but I have some secret eating habits that I will divulge in a later weight loss update post.  I’ll keep you posted on the leg as well stay tuned!
