Do golfers like staring at cold steel?
Ok, I hate to be a nag or a “negative-monger” (I just made that up). And yes, I know the weather has been beautiful outside and we should all be in a happy mood. But I gotta nag about this. We have a situation in University Place that just doesn’t sound like it’s coming out right in the end. The City of University Place earlier this week announced..that the multi-story steel shell located on Bridgeport Way which was supposed to be a completed hotel/civic center/multi-use development/library/teryaki joint/college campus (or some combination of those choices) may not even be done until the year 2011. Uh… We have a potential problem. There’s going to be “gobs” of golfers inundating University Place in 2010 for the U.S. Amateur Open Championships. Put another way: Hundreds of people and the eyes of ESPN and any other TV network that covers golf will be here. What are we going to do if there’s another delay (there’s already been several)? How do we explain a half-finished huge structure in the middle of a huge dirt pile to people from out of town who can’t even pronounce Poo-yallup? Just in case, I’ve come up with a few choices that we can all put on little note cards and carry around when the human onslaught arrives:
- “It’s grunge art. You know, like grunge music? This is grunge art. You’ve never heard of it? It’s a Seattle thing. Man, you’re lame!”
- “It’s a set for a movie being filmed here called, ‘Starting over again. And again.’ “
- “It used to be the headquarters building for Washington Mutual Bank.”
- “What building? I dont’ see any building there. Do YOU see a building?”
It’s a good thing hall of fame sportscaster Keith Jackson is retired and that he probably won’t be doing the “play by play” on TV for the U.S. Amateur Open (Sorry,I don’t know what they call it in golf). If he did, he would likely call this a “FUMMMMBBBLLLEEEEEEE!”
