Wheelz Roller Skating In University Place
There’a a new hoppin’ joint in University Place called “Wheelz.” We went there a couple of weeks ago for St. Patrick’s Day. There was a hundred kids there cause it was school day free skate for one of the local elemetary schools in U.P.
We had a really great time there, it was me, Steve, and my two girls. The girls had a good time skating with their friends. The place hasn’t been open long. It’s located at 2101 Mildred St. The phone number for Wheelz is 253-460-7655. It’s right across the street from the newly renamed Galaxy 8 movie theatre. The skating rink is actually kinda behind some other businesses. It’s a little hard to find.
At one time the building was used as a garage. The garage doors are still there. The place is really lit up in the daytime. Unlike most roller rinks I have been at like the really poorly one in Spanaway “Spinning Wheels, or the over priced puyallup rink “Tiffany’s,” Wheelz gives the University Place crowd somewhere close to go. A place that you don’t feel like you need to arm yourself for protection.
The staff at Wheelz is a delight, they are friendly and helpful. The refs that skate on the floor with the kids are fun-loving. The skates are in pretty good shape at least the 4 wheeled ones, if you are interested in inline skates you might want to bring your own cause the ones there are a little beat up. I’m guessing the owners had a tight budget to work with or are trying to keep the costs down in this down turned economy. I’m sure if the skating rink idea in University Place takes off they will invest in some better skates. There is an area somewhat like a loft above the floor where you can sit and watch the skaters. This makes it easy to keep an eye on your little ones while they have a blast.
I would check out Wheelz the next time you can’t think of something to do in University Place and especially if it’s raining outside, it’s a great little getaway right here at home.

It’d be nice if they’d show any inclination to improve the place now that they’ve been open a year. I’ve never seen that place dead.
I agree that the prices are comparible to Tiffany’s. The only way Wheelz would be deal is if you have your own skates.
I’d be happier with the cement floor if it wasn’t just a garage floor with laquer. Meaning- cement floors are perfectly acceptable when they aren’t riddled with holes with seems all over the place. *Sigh* the place really has a lot of potential.

Molly, wheelz does have a great smooth floor and it is concrete and was just refinished again a week ago. We like taking our family there to skate and love the staff that is so friendly and helpful. I guess you get what you pay for, not friendly at tiffanys and friendly at wheelz.
As far as the prices, they are close.
