Walking Chambers Bay
This was the first day of Spring, or at least the first day of decent Springtime weather. It was, in fact, a sunny, warm, blue-sky afternoon. A great day to take a walk. Close by our house is Chambers Bay Golf Course. The walking paths around Chambers Bay afford the public a beautiful view, some shady forested walking paths, and open meadows/picnic areas. There are steep and winding paths as well, on each end of the walk.
I tried to shut out the sounds of the people around me and concentrate on the beauty of the day, the view of Puget Sound waters, the harbor and also to soak up the sun. This was a day that people began taking their lives from behind the walls of their homes and out into the sun. Some had trouble leaving their problems at the door.
I was walking alone. I had no company and this was to be an afternoon of peace and physical exercise. What I got instead was a glimpse of the lives of those walking along the paths at Chambers Bay. These were short snap shots, such as the young kid talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone as he made the walk. They were deep in conversation about their love for one another. He told her he was mesmerized, not only by her face, but also by her eyes.
Walking downhill toward me was a nice looking, blond, 30-something woman and her pre-teen daughter. The woman was on her cell phone. She was yelling at her ex-husband (or father of the child), “We both have responsibilities and you need to abide by the parenting plan. You need to help pay for her braces and other costs…” She was not happy. I don’t think the daughter was enjoying this walk in the sunshine either.
Some older couples strolled by, slowly. They spoke Russian or Polish. A couple others, older still, some with dogs, some with other family members. People enjoyed the central meadow, a nice lawn area for relaxing, reading and having small picnics.
Six teenagers walked by in a group, joking about the length of the course, the difficulty they may have walking back, and poking fun at each other. Parents with small children stopped to help them along or keep them on the path and from walking over the side of the hill. For the most part, everyone seemed happy. There were the few who could not bring themselves out of their daily funk and into the sunshine. They could have stayed home and been just as miserable.
Walking Chambers Bay should be an experience you share with a friend or loved one. It can be relaxing, or can be vigorous exercise, depending the effort you put into it. Though I went there alone, I had my cell phone and text messaged friends and family. A girlfriend here in U.P., a daughter on vacation in Arizona. All of us enjoying the sunshine together.
