We got a new Westie last week.  We named him Ranger.  He’s the greatest dog.  Westies are very active and need lots of play time and exercise.  One thing I wanted to do with this dog that we never have done in the past is make sure he was properly trained.  I’ve been paying a lot of attention to The Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan.  He’s got some great training principles.  He says that a dog should be treated like a dog first and like our baby or part of our family last.

This way you establish dominance.  It is so primalistic raising a dog properly.  It’s all about who’s in charge.  If you can establish with your dog that you are the pack leader, you will have way less issues.  The key as far as I can see is consistency.  The more of a schedule you can get the dog adapted to the quicker he will learn what is expected of him.  Dogs aim to please their owners or the dominant pack leader.  So if you can maintain that dominance, you will have a dog that is a pleasure to be around.

Our dog doesn’t do many tricks so here’s a video of what he has learned so far.  As you can see Ranger is dominating the pillow.  Don’t let your dog do this to you.
