Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk
So I saw a TV commercial advertising the “3-day walk” for breast cancer. Well, I don’t generally support any charities for my own personal reasons and beliefs, but I figured, I could use the exercise and I had seen some folks doing it a couple of years ago and it looked fun! So I went online to register. I had initially intended to bring my 10 year old daughter with me on this walk. We were really excited. We thought we buy a t-shirt and get some exercise this coming September in Seattle.
Low and behold the website stated clear restrictions that were sure to thwart our plans. First, you must have health care coverage which I don’t. Second, you must pay a $90.00 registration fee. I thought that was a little steep I was expecting something in the range of $25.00 or so. Thirdly, you had to be 16 to register, so my daughter walking with me was out of the question. Finally, you had to agree to raise $2300.00 toward the cause.
I couldn’t believe it, I was taken aback, astonished and disgusted all at once. How could an organization require so much from a volunteer? Also why would they discriminate against those that wanted to participate just because they aren’t covered by a healthcare provider? I really don’t understand these restrictions nor do I want to. If you are asking for participation then do not put unfair restraints on who can show their support.
It just reinforces my personal choices not to participate in charities such as this one and other large “Non-Profit” entities such as the United Way. They are not very user friendly. I am thankful I do not have anyone in my immediate family that has been touched by this ailment, if I had I can only imagine how angry I would be at such ridiculousness.
