Stuck inside, during a blizzard, here are ten things to do to pass the time. We assume the electricity will go out at some time during the storm. Have candles, matches, kindling or Presto logs on hand for a fire [do this only if you have a fireplace in your homeĀ  **this disclaimer posted because, we all know, someone will take this suggestion and build a fire in the middle of their living room floor if not warned of the hazards], keep a flashlight handy, have snacks ready that don’t need to be cooked in the oven or microwaved.

10. Roast marshmallows in the fireplace – make smores if you also have chocolate bars and graham crackers.

9. Play board games by candlelight.

8. Catch up on your reading or brush up on schoolwork that “needs improvement”.

7. Play games that are battery operated.

6. This is a good time to “communicate” with the other humans in your home. Tell jokes or talk about your dreams for the future or stories about your past. Take turns telling ghost stories. It’s a blizzard, not the end of the world, so it is not necessary to tell ALL of your secrets, for Pete’s sake.

5. Make lists. Make a list of your New Year’s resolutions, plans for the coming week, things you need for the house, or make a list of what Christmas shopping you have left to do.

4. Listen to a radio – battery operated of course. IPODS or other mp3 music players will be good to have at this time.

3. Call a friend or relative if your cell phone works at this time, or use your land-line. You do have a land-line, right?

2. Do a little house cleaning. What else do you have to do?

1. Write a letter to someone. When is the last time you wrote a letter? Or start writing that novel you always wanted to write. You’ll never finish it if you never start it.

I thought I would get this blog finished before the lights go out. Now, where are those candles?
