You have probably been asked or wondered yourself, “What would you/I do with a million dollars?” To sit down and make a list of all the things you might do with a million dollars or a large fortune of some kind, is a good exercise to see just what your priorities are.

Most people when asked that question, will answer that they would buy some object, like a new car or house, maybe a boat. Many will also provide for relatives and parents in some way. Sizable gifts might be given. There are many ways to spend the money.

Investing the money is often secondary. “After I buy all these things, I will put the rest of the money in a bank and live on the interest earned.” Some will list investment in a business as one thing they would do.

After going on a spending spree, how will you spend the remainder of your days? Would you keep your current job or start your own business? Would you decide to quit your job and spend the rest of your life traveling the world, maybe writing a book about your travels?

Making a list, revising the list and examining the reasoning behind the decisions of how you would spend your money, tells a lot about you and what is important to you. It may reveal what you think you will need to be happy. You have heard the phrase “Money won’t buy happiness.” This may be true. There are many rich and famous people that are miserable. We have seen examples of this in the news year after year. Money will not prevent you from becoming divorced, an alcoholic, a wife-beater/murderer, a bad parent, or prevent depression and suicide.

Maybe there should be a re-distribution of wealth, as many have debated recently in political circles. Perhaps money should be taken from the rich and given to the emotionally stable, thoughtful, well-adjusted people in our society. While I don’t believe in the redistribution of wealth, I also don’t believe that money is the answer to all the problems in the world. I digress.

This goes beyond basic needs. After the necessities are taken care of, the money that remains,is what we are talking about.Take the time to “make a list” of what you would do if you were given a sizable fortune, such as the current amount of one of the state lotteries. The object of this little exercise is to see, for yourself, what you value and why.

There is no definitive list, everyone has their own, based on needs and/or desires. There are no right or wrong answers in the list you make. Share your list with a non-judgmental friend if you wish. If you find that money actually can buy lasting happiness, let us know about this.
