Oxford University List of Most Annoying Phrases (2008)
Oxford University researchers have compiled a list of often used and most irritating phrases. Their database alerts them to new words and phrases and can tell them which expressions are disappearing. It also shows how words are being misused.
Many annoyingly over-used expressions actually began as office lingo, such as 24/7 and “synergy”.
Other phrases to irritate people are “literally” and “ironically”, when they are used out of context.
The top ten most irritating phrases:
1 - At the end of the day
2 - Fairly unique
3 - I personally
4 - At this moment in time
5 - With all due respect
6 - Absolutely
7 - It’s a nightmare
8 - Shouldn’t of
9 - 24/7
10 - It’s not rocket science
This information comes from the “brain trust” at a respectable university. It seems such a survey could have been taken by the ladies of The View, just the same. I personally don’t believe that this should be the type of research going on at an expensive place of learning. The time could be better spent studying the effect of ice on swollen ankles versus heat. THAT is scientific studies. The survey on language certainly isn’t rocket science.
With all due respect, such university studies, as well as much of what the TV news channels consider “news”, is just garbage. And, at the end of the day, what Americans need more of is “useful” information, not trivia. They shouldn’t of wasted time on this. The average citizen is so ignorant. Just ask Miss Teen USA 2007 from South Carolina.
At this moment in time, it is fairly unique when actual studies of science, medicine or technology are conducted AND we learn of break-throughs in these fields.
Some blogs provide more information worthy of time spent reading. Was this Oxford study a complete waste of time? Absolutely! In the meantime, we hope to post useful information here on this blog. Come back often. We are here 24/7.
